Here is a brief biographical sketch of Wor. Brother Hugh William McKenzie taken from local newspaper reports of his death and funeral:
“First section foreman lake branch line
First section foreman on the Lake Cowichan branch line, E & N Railway, Hugh William McKenzie, 86, native son of Victoria, died here March 23 and was buried Wednesday March 27.
Mr. McKenzie was a grandson of the late William Thompson, first white man in North Saanich, and his mother, Helen Thompson, eldest daughter of the pioneer and first white girl born there. Mr. McKenzie was born there.
He served the railway in this district from previous to World War One until about 1940, going to Qualicum and retiring at Langford.
He leaves two sons, Kenneth, Campbell River; and Capt. Gregor McKenzie, Chilliwack; one daughter, Mrs. J. (Helen) Greenan, Campbell River; seven grandchildren, one brother, Dr. M. McKenzie, Sidney; and three sisters, Mrs. L. Nimmo, Mrs. W. Robertson, Central Saanich, and Mrs. R. Kennedy, Sidney.”

Wor. Brother Hugh William McKenzie was a member of Temple Lodge, No.33. He served as Junior Warden in 1923, Senior Warden in 1924 and Worshipful Master in 1925.
